1. Department Activities for the year of 2018-2019
The Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology organized UGC sponsored one day Workshop on Mushroom Cultivation on 16.03.2019 for their students to enrich the knowledge and to make the way for entrepreneurship.
In this workshop, the resource person Dr. R. SHENBHAGARAMAN delivered brief lecture on Mushroom cultivation and after that he started hands on training for how to cultivate the mushroom, Types of mushroom, edible mushrooms, poisonous mushroom, technique adopted for cultivation, marketing tactics, value added products from mushroom are explain in detail by resource person.
The Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology organized UGC sponsored one day Seminar on Diversity and Ecology of Fungi for the Botany students and staff members to gain the depth knowledge and enter into research field of Mycology. In this invited seminar, the resource person Dr. P.T. Devarajan, Asso. Professor, Presidency College, Chennai, delivered a wonderful lecture on Diversity and Ecology of Fungi and also showed astonishing pictures of different fungal species.
He gave clear cut ideas about the types of fungi, growth pattern, mode of reproduction and nutrition status. The students and staff members are eagerly interacted with resource person and cleared in their doubts in fruitful manner.
- A.Thangaraja was participated the Orientation Program from 16.08.2018 to 12.09.2018 conducted by UGC – Human Resource Development Centre, University of Madras Chepauk, Chennai.
- Dineshiya from III year B.Sc., Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology obtained first prize in “The throb of talent Ripple the throb of talent” Fuchia2k18 an inter-collegiate competition” was conducted by Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, Gurunank College, Chennai on 19.12.2018.
- Vasanthi from III year B.Sc., Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology obtained first prize in “The throb of talent Ripple the throb of talent” Fuchia2k18 – Junk Art – an inter-collegiate competition” was conducted by Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, Gurunank College, Chennai on 19.12.2018.
- Mercy, B., Chirencheevi, Naveenkumar, Bersiyal Sophiya, Dhivya, from III year B.Sc., Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology were participated National Conference on “ Vistas in Biodiversity, Biology , Biotechnology, and Nanotechnology of Algae” conducted by Department of Botany, Madras Christian College, Chennai, 20 -22, Sept- 2018.
2. Department Activities for the year of 2019-2020
The first National level Conference on Biodiversity and Conservation of Medicinal Plants (NCBCMP 2020) was organized by the Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology of Dr. Ambedkar Government Arts College in collaboration with Tamil Nadu State Council of Higher Education, Tamilnadu on 04 – 05, March 2020. Over 201 delegates representing 35 different institutions all over country, registered at the NCBCMP 2020 conference, among them 126 research papers were submitted in the conference.
The research papers submitted by the participants were published in the Conference proceedings of NCBCMP2020 with ISBN number (9978-81-945377-1-7) which provided an overview of the conference focused into biodiversity and conservation of medicinal plants. Inauguration of conference proceeded by our Chief Guest, Prof. N. Mathivanan, Director and Head, Centre for Advanced Study in Botany, University of Madras, Chennai. The Presidential Address of the conference was given by the Dr.A.Geetha, Principal, Dr.Ambedkar Govt Arts College and also she delivered the impacts of medicinal plants on society.
The Conference Valedictory address delivered by Chief Guest Dr.G.N.Hariharan, Executive Director, M.S. Swaminathan Research institute, Taramani, Chennai and he emphasized about the value of the medicinal plants and their impact on our day today life. All the participants of the conference furnished outstanding feedback encouraging us to conduct similar type of conference in the forthcoming years.
The conference provided a rare opportunity for extensive discussion leading to a new ‘way to conservation and utilization of medicinal plants for human health and social welfare. The participants analyzed where the status of medicinal plants sciences stand today and where they are heading, what their impact on research has been and what society expects from them. They also established what efforts should be invested to make medicinal plants research advance in response to both these expectations and the challenges posed by human and social welfare.

- P.Balaji was participated the International Seminar on Turning Technology and Innovation To Climate Response in Sustainable Development Conducted by Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, Presidency College, Chennai on 20.01.2020.
- A.Thangaraja was participated the refresher course on Botany-XII from 10.10.2019 to 23.10.2019 conducted by UGC – Human Resource Development Centre, University of Madras Chepauk, Chennai.
- Teena, D from I year student obtained first prize in “Phyto Nika 2020 – Slice in Thin” competition conducted by Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, Presidency College, Chennai on 22.01.2020.
- The Board of Studies meeting for the academic year 2019-2020 was conducted on 10.06.2019 in the Department for revising the syllabus according to the current requirement.
- Lavanya, N. Murali, Merlin, B., Saranaya from III year B.Sc., Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, Manikandan from II year B.Sc., Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, Bhavani, V., Gopala Krishna, P., Teena, D., from I year B.Sc., Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, were participated the International Seminar on Turning Technology and Innovation To Climate Response in Sustainable Development Conducted by Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, Presidency College, Chennai on 20.01.2020.
