HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Home Science – Nutrition, Food Service Management and Dietetics was initiated in the year 2013 vide G.O 163 of the Government of Tamil Nadu at Dr. Ambedkar Government Arts College, Vyasarpadi , Chennai -600039

Since its inception, the department faculty and students always have had the mission to stay healthy and create healthy awareness. With the sanctioned strength of 24 students and three permanent faculty ( at present two permanent faculty and one guest faculty)  the department has strived very hard to provide quality education in the field  Home Science – Nutrition, FSM  and  Dietetics and also cater to the overall holistic  wellbeing of its students. Since its inception 6 batches  of have successfully graduated. Ten  of  them have pursued higher education ( M. Sc Home Science ) while the rest are all gainfully employed .

An amalgamation of academic excellence and community service in improving the health profile of the downtrodden in North Chennai is the primary mission and vision of the department. This is evidently expressed through various student centric activities and extension programmes , with special reference to the HEALTH FOR ALL, annual health awareness programme targeting  various segments of the population both in the campus and in the neighborhood 

1. Aim of the DEPARTMENT

The aim of the department is to provide sound theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the broad spectrum of Home Science and the specialized domains of Nutrition Food Service Management and dietetics through innovative teaching learning methodologies. Besides, the department aims at equipping learners with competencies like managerial, communicative and interpersonal skills and instilling in them  moral values, professional ethics and  social responsibilities.

2. Mission of the DEPARTMENT:

  1. To cater  not only to the  cognitive skills of the students but provide a platform  that caters to emotional, moral , social economic wellbeing of the students  by  the course offered and the personalized  mentor system adhered to.
  2. To ensure that students have a moral responsibility to the pressing burden of food security and nutrition related problems  of the nation through courses offered such as food science , food preservation and processing, nutrition through life cycle,  human development , therapeutic dietetic, community nutrition  ,  resource  management and food service management .
  3. To provide quality undergraduate students through imparting sound theoretical foundation in nutrition, food service management and dietetics and practical exposure of the same that would help them as emerge  as either leaders / entrepreneurs with professional and moral ethics or pursue higher education in these domains. 
  4. To ensure that students put into practice what they learn by being healthy and staying fit so that they will be healthy citizens and spread health awareness to all .
