Ours is a prestigious department, offering UG, PG and Ph.D. programmes. B.Sc. degree programme in Mathematics was started in the year 1981 and is successfully run till this date without any glitch. Both mediums of instructions, Tamil and English, are offered with an intake of 24 students in each section. M.Sc. degree programme in Mathematics was started in the year 2005 with an intake of 25 students. Initially, it was run as self-supporting programme and subsequently in the academic year 2010-2011, the programme had been regularized and is fully funded by Government of Tamil Nadu. Students of both sexes are admitted with strict adherence to the reservation policies of Government of Tamil Nadu.

Right from the inception good results are achieved both in UG and PG programmes. Both UG and PG are run under semester pattern with Choice Based Credits System (CBCS) and with Learning Outcome based Curriculum Framework (LOCF). Syllabus is revised periodically as per the stipulations of UGC and strict adherence to TANSHE guidelines. While revising the syllabus utmost care is taken so that it suits to the current trends in academics and employment needs. Several elective courses are offered to have wide range to choose from. Courses that are useful for further higher studies and research are introduced. Besides regular courses, Non-major elective courses are also offered to other programmes in order to gain fundamental knowledge in other related courses as well. To instill moral values, environmental awareness and to achieve personality development, courses such as Value Based Education, Environmental Science and Personality Enrichment are offered. To meet the corporate needs students were offered soft skill courses such as Professional English, Communicative English, Spoken English & Presentations skills, Mathematics for competitive exams, etc. To make our students IT enabled, computer related courses are also offered. To have hands on industrial experience, students of I M.Sc. are subjected to undergo an internship program at the end of the second semester. With regard to assessment of students, students were assessed continuously by the way of periodic tests, assignments, model examinations and with a final end semester examination. Tests, assignments, model exams and regularity to classes account for 25% of marks whereas final end semester examination account for 75% of marks.

In due course, with best efforts of our eminent staff, our department was elevated as research department offering Ph.D. (Part-Time) program from August 2000. Under the active guidance of our staff hitherto 7 were awarded doctoral degrees. Currently 3 students are pursuing Ph.D. degree program in our department.

VISION of the MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT:

The vision of the department is that it would create a vibrant intellectual community that is acumen with a strong analytical, logical and critical thinking, that has a conceptual understanding of nature and structure of Mathematics and that could apply the Mathematical knowledge in various disciplines, contribute to scientific growth and nation building.
