The Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology,  Dr. Ambedkar Government Arts College,  was established in 1974 as an ancillary department. From the 2013 onwards the department elevated as a MAJOR department, with nomenclature PLANT BIOLOGY AND PLANT BIOTECHNOLOGY and offered a B.Sc., Plant Biology and Plant biotechnology programme. Now we have four Teaching Staff members and one laboratory assistant in the Department.

Since its inception, faculty members of the department have been involved in teaching and mentoring students, as well as in pursuing research. They are highly experienced and adept at teaching and training students of B. Sc. Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, as allied subjects to students of B.Sc. Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology and students from other departments who opt for Botany as their Generic Elective subjects. The department focuses on undergraduate teaching-learning and appropriately combines classical teaching with innovative digital teaching tools to augment students’ understanding of the subjects.

The main thrust area of teaching and research are Lichens, Plant Taxonomy, Plant Physiology, Genetics, Plant Biotechnology, Systemic Botany and Bioinformatics.  The department has also organized Seminar, Symposium, Conference and online Quiz. The department also provides training to students by invites eminent scientists for delivering popular scientific talks very often. The departmental library has a significant number of both text and Reference books and subscribed journals. The department also maintains a Botanical Garden in the name of famous organic farmer Nammalvar at the college campus.

Aim of the DEPARTMENT

The aim of this course is to develop holistic knowledge of plants through the study of the diversity and functional aspects plant domain. It is career orienting in nature that opens many job options after its successful completion The program will equip the students with skills required for higher studies and jobs in Forestry, Horticulture, Genetics, and Biotechnology 

Vision of the Department

1. The department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology is committed to function as the Centre of Excellence in Plant Biology education and application-oriented basic and advanced research in the field of plant science.
2. To bestow the students with a basic applied understanding of the subject through innovative teaching and research, and to outreach on the arrays and processes of life
3. focus on the patterns and processes that enable predictive understanding of plants and their environments leading to strengths in the areas of ecology, evolution, and Systematics
4. Have better understanding important features of life cycle of Plant kingdom and know their Economic importance of plants in conserving for food and medicine   

Mission of the Department

1. To learn, sustain and transmit knowledge concerning basic Botany and endow with leadership in the Plant Biology sciences.
2. To develop academic collaboration by offering new courses and upgrading programmes to a wider spectrum of students and researchers.
3. To produce entrepreneurs for prosperous ventures in the selected fields of Plant Biology of their advancements with global perspective.
4. Imparting in-depth knowledge on basic, frontier and thrust areas in Botany
